1. What is the idea?

The idea is to explore the theory of six degrees of separation and in the process create a unique single page snapshot of the world's internet users. The Million People Page is a cross between social networking sites like myspace/friendster and the Disney Leave a Legacy sculpture at Epcot. Oh, and we borrowed the single page concept from the (now almost dead) world of pixel advertising...

If you have ever wondered who ends up getting the jokes or emails you forward on (or how computer viruses move around the world), then this site is for you! By adding a profile and then inviting all your friends or email contacts to add one too (its free), you will be able to discover just how many people in the world you are connected to!

Ok, so how does the site work?

Each pixel on the homepage represents a person, and the pixel colour indicates the country the person is from. The homepage is broken down into 10,000 square blocks of 100 pixels (each block is 10x10 pixels), which you can click on to "zoom in" and view photos of the 100 people in that block. Each person can then be clicked to reveal their profile, which shows the people they are connected to. You can find out your "six degrees of separation" by following the referral links of the people you are connected to!

Each pixel profile can include a photo and details (including a 'favourite website', for those who want to promote a website). Once you have added your pixel profile, it will be displayed on the homepage permanently. Only your ranking on the page will change over time according to the number of people who view your profile, and the number of connections you have made.

As the beginning of 2006 there were over 6.5 billion (6,500,000,000) people in the world, over 1.1 billion of whom are online. So, the Million People Page could ultimately represent up to 1 in 6,500 people in the world and 1 in 1,000 internet users!

2. Why should I add a pixel profile?

Because you will have the opportunity to participate in a unique fun website, which will not only allow you to discover who in the world you are connected to, but also allows you to leave your mark for posterity (and even promote yourself or a website). It will be like an internet version of the 'Leave a legacy' sculpture at Disney's Epcot Centre, a lasting record for the future.

Every time your profile is viewed or you refer someone, you move up the rankings, so you could be "one in a million". We have all kinds of people adding profiles for all kinds of reasons: some want to promote themselves (actors or models, for example), some want to promote a website or their friendster/myspace profile, others just want to join in and discover who they are connected to.

3. How much is a pixel profile?

We want as many people as possible to join in this experiment, so we offer both free and regular profile options.

Free Profiles
Free profiles are for individual (non-commercial) use only. You need to appear over 16 to have a free profile - this is to ensure minors can only add a profile by getting an adult involved.

Regular Profiles
Regular pixel profiles are USD $2, and have the following additional benefits:

So, if you primarily want to promote a website, hate ads, want the maximum opportunity to build your ranking, or to communicate with other people on the site, it is best to go for a regular profile.

Hang on, won't this site make you very rich?

This is something we used to get asked a lot, probably because elements of our site were borrowed from the now defunct world of pixel advertising, were every Alex Tew wannabe in the world tried to jump on the bandwagon to riches. To be fair, it probably holds us back, but we like the idea of having all 1 million people on one page... (any alternative suggestions welcome!)

In reality, most people go for free profiles, and that is ok by us - the point of the site is to see if we can create something that is both interesting and unusual, and test out the theory of six degrees of separation.

We offer regular profiles and sponsorship advertising to help us towards covering the costs of hosting this fun site - which they often don't - so if you really like the site and feel you would like to give a donation towards our running costs, please be our guest :)

4. Can I add more than one pixel profile?

Pixels can only be added individually, however you are free to add pixel profiles for friends and family as long as you get their consent first. If you want to add family and friends, it is best to wait until your own pixel profile is published so you can list yourself as the referrer - as the more people you refer, the more links to your profile, and the higher your ranking will be!

5. Where is my pixel profile?

The top ranked people

Your rank, and therefore pixel position on the homepage, varies according to how many connections you have as well as how many times your profile is viewed, and the homepage changes daily to reflect changes in position the previous day.

As the site grows, the most connected people will start to get the highest rankings, and will end up being viewed most often by people cruising from person to person along the referral chains. So, the more people you personally recommend, the better your ranking will be. And if you were referred by a friend, make sure you link to them when creating your profile.

The grid squares run from left to right, top to bottom, so the highest ranked people will move towards the top left grid square on the screen, whilst the lowest ranked people will move towards the bottom right grid square.

As the number of people on the site grows, you may need to use your Person ID to search for your rank and profile, or visit our search page to find a person by their country and name.

6. Can I communicate with other people on the site?

Yes, if you have a regular profile, you can leave short messages (or 'shouts') on other people's profiles, and you can also make or reply to shouts on your own profile. If you have a free profile, you can only add or reply to shouts in your own profile.

Shout messages appear with your photo and a link to your profile, and up to 10 shouts will be displayed.

9. What about my privacy?

All publicly viewable profile details except First Name and Country are optional, so if you are a little camera shy or uncomfortable adding a certain piece of information, then you can simply leave it out! Your Suname and Email address are collected for security only, and are never revealed on to anyone on the site.

Profiles with photos are more interesting, and usually get higher ranking, so if you are uncomfortable showing your face to the world but want to join in, why not take a shot at a distance, use an old high school photo, or upload a picture that you feel represents you - maybe of a pet or a funny picture - as long as you own the copyright in the image, then you can use it. Check out what other people have done if you need some inspiration!

Please be aware that if you link your favourite website to your myspace profile or personal website, you may be allowing a person to gain more information about you than you have posted on our site.

10. Can I upgrade to a regular profile later?

Yes. If your profile has already been published, you can simply click the PayPal button at the bottom of your profile page. If you are still waiting for a free profile to be published, simply enter your order number in the box below and click Go! This will ensure that your PayPal payment is referenced with your order number so that your profile can go online without delay. If you don't remember your order number, please contact us. If you haven't yet added a profile, please add a pixel profile here.
