I found myself awake at 4:30am this morning, thanks to a head cold, and despite a branded hot lemon drink, found I couldn't get back to sleep at all. So, out of sheer want of anything better to do whilst waiting for sunrise, I settled down to surf the net and see what was interesting people in the world.
My usual first port of call for this sort of thing is Alexas
Movers and Shakers, which is a sort of who's who of the hottest websites. Unsurprisingly, the biggest movers related to either the superbowl or the controversial Danish cartoons.
Interestingly,
Bob Parsons Blog has been innundated with very polarised opinions since his company, GoDaddy, spent somewhere in the region of $5m to run an ad on SuperBowl Sunday. It wasn't the amount of money he spent which caused the interest, but the ad itself. I couldn't help but think that if the ad had run at a
Six Nations Game, it wouldn't even have raised a European eyebrow.
I then moved on to services which I have only recently discovered -
Del.icio.us and
Yahoo! My Web - which allow people to save and share bookmarks to sites they like. Today, these lead me to discover Seth Godin's blog, and an article called
How can I get more traffic?, in which he says:
The problem, of course, is in the "get." The request has at its foundation the assumption that what you've built has somehow earned attention.
Which got me thinking, you can either spend $$$ on stunts to generate press (good or bad), or rely on good old word of mouth (whether by email, or a bookmark sharing service) to let the world know your site exists. And, you know, it seems to be working. For a site which went online around 3 weeks ago to be averaging 115 unique visitors a day via word of mouth is pretty good, and the traffic seems to be increasing each day. This week has seen a traffic high of 330 unique visitors and 1346 page views in one day, and visitors from Finland, France, Germany, Canada and the USA starting to join the UK crowd.
If you like this site, even if you are too shy to
add a profile yourself, please bookmark it at del.icio.us or Yahoo! My Web (links are at the bottom of every page on the site), and let your friends know via email too.
